A big hello from myself and the new committee for 2016-2017. We’ve been working hard this summer to ensure the best opportunities, prizes and socials for the coming year, which will all be announced within the next month. But as our first official announcement of the year, to get you excited about LULS having its best year yet, we have some very exciting news…
We are absolutely delighted to announce that the President of the University of Leicester Law Society (LULS) for 2016-17 will be Lord Neuberger, President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.
This is a brilliant opportunity for the society and for clarification, as Chairperson I run the society day to day but the President’s role was brought in last year so that the President would become an invited senior member of the legal profession, holding office for the academic year. They act as the figurehead of the society and are invited to give a keynote lecture, judge the final of a mooting competition and champion the cause of the Law School’s and Society’s outstanding students in accessing what remains an elite profession. To have a senior member of the profession as our President adds prestige to our Law School and Law Society, and that is why we are so pleased to appoint the most senior judge in the country as ours.
Following the success of Dinah Rose QC’s term as LULS President last year, we wanted to appoint a President who could do all of this – especially in our golden jubilee year, when we mark 50 years of Law at the University of Leicester and the 50th anniversary of the Law Society too. To have this unbelievable opportunity as we embark on the re-branding of LULS, as we head in a new direction in order make it the most successful year to date, this news just exemplifies that we will start as we mean to go on. We can think of no better person in the legal profession to be our President this year than Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury.
Lord Neuberger studied Chemistry at Oxford before being called to the Bar in 1974. He was made a High Court judge in 1996, and a Lord Justice of Appeal and member of the Privy Council in 2004. In 2007, he succeeded Lord Nicholls of Birkenhead to become a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, and the youngest sitting Law Lord of the twentieth century. Lord Neuberger was appointed Master of the Rolls in 2009, and in 2012 it was announced that he would succeed Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers as the President of the Supreme Court, becoming the United Kingdom’s most senior judge.
Lord Neuberger will visit Leicester Law School on 3rd March 2017, to deliver a keynote lecture and to judge the final of our mooting competition. Further details will become available in due course, but for now please reserve the date in your diaries as it’ll be an unmissable opportunity.
We are exceptionally proud and excited to have the President of the Supreme Court as the President of our Law Society this year, during our golden jubilee, and we are looking forward to you all meeting our new President on 3rd March 2017.
We are your Law Society, and together we will make this the most successful LULS year to date.
