What are Mock Trials?

A mock trial is an exciting opportunity to engage in simulated court proceedings, where teams of two will compete in presenting a fictitious legal scenario. Participants will craft a compelling narrative and build strong legal arguments, with the support of a professional-led workshop on advocacy skills and argumentation. The same legal professionals who conduct the workshop will also judge the finals, ensuring expert evaluation of each team’s performance. The winning pair will receive a special prize. This year, we are hosting two criminal mock trials and one civil mock trial, offering a dynamic experience in both areas of law.

Our Mock Trial Officers for the year 2024/25 are Claire Watson and Blossom Onyeukwu.

Why should I compete?

Participating in a mock trial is a valuable opportunity for students, no matter their future career path. Employers across all industries value the ability to articulate an argument and speak confidently in front of others—skills that mock trial participation can help you develop and demonstrate on your CV. Additionally, prizes such as mini-pupillages or other sought-after work experience opportunities are often available to winners. The event also provides excellent networking opportunities, allowing participants to connect with legal professionals delivering the workshops and judging the finals, as well as other members of the University of Leicester Law Society.
